PBX, ISDN, VoIP – what?
PBX stands for Private Branch Exchange and is one of many terms for a telephone system. A PBX or telephone system connects several terminals – i.e. telephones, fax machines, answering machines – to each other (internally) and to one or more lines of the public telephone network (externally). A telephone system offers numerous functional fea-tures, such as call forwarding, voice recordings, busy lamp fields (BLFs) and waiting loops. In addition, the telephone system can be optionally extended with further functionalities such as interactive voice menus (IVR).
The PBX communicates with the public telephone network via analog lines (POTS), Mo-bilfunk, gateways or still ISDN. The digital communication standard ISDN can transmit voice and data over different connections, but will be completely switched off in the near future. Internally, the PBX switches wired or wirelessly with end devices.
In contrast, modern VoIP-based PBXs use the Session Initiation Protocol, also known as SIP. They are software-based, which means they run on commercially available servers. Since the individual end devices no longer have to be physically connected to each other, completely new possibilities open up for companies.
